Student Fundraiser to Attend Canonization of Kateri Tekakwitha in Rome
Three students of the native American flute have been invited to perform at the Canonization of Kateri Tekakwitha, the first Native American Saint. The students are taught by Vince Redhouse a well-known musician and a member of the St. Pius X Knights of Columbus Co. 10762.
In order to make this happen, the students will need to raise funds to make the journey to Rome in October. The St. Pius Knights and parishioners will host a fundraising concert featuring the students and Vince Redhouse on Monday August 20, from 7 PM to 9 PM at St. Pius X Catholic Church. A suggested donation is $10 - $20 and all proceeds will go to help the students with their travel costs.

We are awaiting issuance of the certificates of insurance for Safeway and Wal-Mart. I will send those out as soon as they are available.
We do not have a permission letter from Bashas at this time. I am working on an appeal with assistance from Special Olympics. I will let you know how that turns out. Frys will not issue their letter until September – however the Knights have exclusive fundraising access to Frys stores on October 5, 6, and 7.
Safeway does not issue permission letters. Your council will need to request permission individually following the guidelines provided by Safeway.
I know this seems complicated, but different store chains have different rules and we must comply.
In addition, I have reports that other stores such as Sunflower Market and Wal-Mart have been very cooperative on a store-by-store basis.
Councils should order their Tootsie Rolls soon. Many of you will have your drives in September so get your orders in well ahead of time. Smaller councils should consider teaming up with other council to combine your orders and eliminate shipping costs.
In addition to you our own council’s efforts, consider having your favorite charities submit a Grant Application. Last year, all submitted grant applications were funded at 100% of the request. While we cannot guarantee that again this year, we do urge you to have charities submit them. Grants are funded by the 25% state share of your fundraising.
The forms are available on the website at:

Working together. On 18 July, a request for assistance was received from Brother Karl (deployed to Afghanistan) Griffor's wife. Amy requested help from Our Lady of the Mountains Council 10799 in removing flood debris from her fence line and adjusting her fence to allow further debris from collecting at the fence line. Brother Knights and family members again stepped up on 19 Jul and rendered their support. Less than two hours later the job was done before the rains came. A thank you was extended from Amy for the assistance that she received from Brothers Rob Bridges, Deacon Bill & Jo Merritt, David Waldmann, Chuck Everding, and Tom Whipp who grabbed their rakes, hammers, pliers and wire cutters to get the job done.

Brothers,
Did you know . . . ?
That the American Wheelchair Mission is the official mobility partner of the Knights of Columbus, and is headed by Chris Lewis, a Fourth Degree Knight and son of beloved actor and comedian Jerry Lewis?
That the American Wheelchair Mission has in recent years distributed more than 30,000 life-changing chairs to children, teens and adults in Afghanistan, Cuba, Guatemala, Haiti, the Holy Land, Honduras, Mexico, Poland, the Philippines, Mexico, and Viet Nam?
That one of the most successful fundraising and membership growth tools is a parish drive known as “Wheelchair Sunday?”
That the Wheelchair Mission is one of the Featured Programs in the Council Service Programs and that a council that successfully completes a Wheelchair Mission program can receive full credit for all Columbian Award requirements in the Community Activities program?
Now you know.
I ask all councils to consider sponsoring a parish drive. I have attached several files to help you plan and provide more information. Please review them, see how easy it is to do this program.
Take the time to visit www.amwheelchair.org to see the videos, articles and slideshows about the Wheelchair program.
When you conduct a drive, please use the attached form (also available on www.amwheelchair.org) to submit your proceeds and let me know your council name and number and amount raised.
Contact me or Dan Moberg if you have any questions or need the Wheelchair Sunday DVD.
Vivat Jesus!
